The Christmas tree beside the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest has a history going back more than 30 years. The first national Christmas tree was placed in 1991, and every year since then, as Christmas approaches, the tree can be seen in front of the Parliament building. The tree has become a tradition and over the years it has played an increasingly important role in the capital’s Christmas atmosphere and it has also become a must-see stop on the bus tours of the city.
This year, the country’s Christmas tree is a 20-metre, 45-year-old silver fir from the town of
Dubicsány, which will be on display from the 25th of November in Kossuth Square, next to the Parliament. The fir tree arrived to the capital with the help of soldiers of the Hungarian Defence Forces and experts from the disaster management service. The silver fir, which was planted 45 years ago, was cut down on the 24th of November. It weighs nearly 5 tonnes and its trunk’s diameter is about 50 centimetres.

This year the tree was choosen from a total of 27 trees. The selection was based on the size, shape and foliage of the Christmas tree, as well as on technical criteria.
The Christmas tree is usually set up at the end of November/beginning of December and remains in place until the end of the holidays. The events are accompanied by a range of activities, such as advent events, markets and musical performances, all contributing to the festive atmosphere of the Christmas holidays.
This tradition is an important festive symbol not only for Budapest, but for the whole country, symbolising togetherness and love during the festive season.
