VERESEGYHÁZ BEAR SANCTUARY

Program

The Veresegyház Bear Sanctuary is the only Bear Sanctuary in Central Europe, which was created with the cooperation of the World Organization for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and the Municipality of Veresegyháza. It is the perfect place for a day for your family if you want to get away from the city for a little while.

Only 25 kilometers from Budapest, the visitors can see the animals up close, completely safely without disturbing them on the unique area of 11 hectares.

The type and number of animals living in the sanctuary is constantly changing, as they accept animals from private farms and other zoos from all over the country as well as from abroad. The park is owned and maintained by the Municipality of Veresegyház and it is currently the third most visited zoo in the country with an average of 200,000 visitors a year.

What to see and do at the sanctuary?

The main attraction of course are the bears. The first bears arrived to the sanctuary in 1998 and since then they have been housing bears from different parts of Hungary, Romania, Italy and even Spain. At the moment there are more than 20 bears in the park. You can walk around their whole living area and get to see them bathing in the small lakes, play with each other, taking a nap or climbing on trees. You can feed them snacks that you can purchase at the entrance. However there is a daily limit on the snacks available to avoid overfeeding.

The second inhabitants of the sanctuary were the wolves, who live in a forested area that is very similar to their natural habitat. There are two packs of wolves in the sanctuary: the main pack that do not accept people and the hand-reared wolves. The caretakers only get in contact with the main pack of wild wolves during feeding and medical check-ups, otherwise they live happily on their own at the forested area. The hand-reared wolves are kept in a different area where presentations are held every weekend, where you can have a closer look and learn some information about them.

The newest attractions are the wild cats of the park. Since 2017 the sanctuary has been housing three lynxes and in 2019 a lion house was built, which is currently home to 12 lions.

Another attraction to see is the open feeding of racoons and coatis. The informative presentations along with the feedings are held by the animals’ caretakers every weekend.

Fallow deer, mouflon and Hungarian rack sheep are presented at the area behind the bears. On the right side of the road leading to Medveotthon, visitors can see gray cattle.

The birdlife that can be observed is also worth mentioning. It is a great experience to observe the ravens, crows, and mallards on the lake, but we also occasionally see gray herons and starlings. There is a lot of bustle, especially at feeding time.

Besides watching animals, the little ones can enjoy the park’s playground and the teddy bear area with the teddy bear lift. There is also a small train that you can ride around the park, and when you get tired you can have a snack at the picnic area.

Take a break from the city and come enjoy this unique zoo with our team, Coach Hire Hungary.
